Local Policy and Advocacy Work

Policy Projects

WOW is involved in a number of policy initiatives that support lifelong economic self-sufficiency for women and girls in the DC Metro Area, including:

  • Serving as an appointed member of the Workforce Investment Council and active member of various committees
  • The Project-Labor Agreement
  • DC Chamber of Commerce
  • On-going monitoring of Mayor Fenty’s Administration, City Council, and DC agencies

Advocacy Efforts

WOW promotes local advocacy efforts that address workforce development and basic human needs issues from a gender perspective. To accomplish this, we work with community stakeholders and local groups throughout the DC Metro Area. Our participation includes:

  • Workforce Development
      • Co-convener of the DC Jobs Council
      • Appointed member of the Workforce Investment Council
      • Member of the Workforce Organizations for Regional Collaborative (WORC)
      • Member of the Coalition for Paid Sick and Safe Days in DC
  • Women and Girls
      • Chair of the DC Women’s Agenda, a citywide women’s advocacy coalition
  • Basic Human Needs
      • Member of the Fair Budget Coalition
      • Member of the living wage coalitions of DC and Northern Virginia
