Women in Protective Services

Creating Career Pathways for Women in the Protective Services Sector of the DC Area

WOW offers a career preparation program for women interested in law enforcement.  This project links low-income women to employers in the protective service industry by providing well-designed training and employment opportunities.

This innovative program for women in the DC metro area was developed to connect women searching for jobs that pay living wages to the DC area’s protective services industry, which has many jobs that pay good wages, benefits, have defined career paths, and provide extensive, paid, on-the-job training.

The program specifically assists women who are working on particular issues (physical fitness, academic skills, etc.) prior to being accepted into a police academy.

The program components include:

  • Case management
  • Individualized career planning
  • Physical fitness/defensive tactics
  • Individual mentors — female sworn law enforcement officers
  • Support group
  • Debt counseling
  • Assistance in overcoming many barriers to employment in the criminal justice field
  • Employment screening
  • Community policing activities
