Building Futures Pre-Apprenticeship Training and Placement

Wider Opportunities for Women (WOW) is a partner on Building Futures, a project of the Community Services Agency of the Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO (CSA).  WOW and the CSA have been awarded a three-year contract under the US Department of Labor’s Green Jobs Innovation Fund to provide pre-apprenticeship construction training and job placement services to low-income DC metro area women and men.   Building Futures prepares, places and supports graduates in green construction jobs and apprenticeships such as energy efficiency and green materials occupations.  To qualify, DC area women and men must be at least 20 years old, have a high school diploma or GED, a valid drivers’ license or learner’s permit, be healthy, drug-free and interested in construction work.   Classes are six weeks, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Friday.  Our dynamic interactive curriculum includes:

  • Essential construction skills:  construction math, blueprint reading, certifications in OSHA 10 Safety and First Aid-CPR, orientation to the industry, and tool identification and use
  • LEED 101 online certification in green building basics
  • Road Flagging certification
