Internships pay $15 per day to help cover transportation costs.
WOW is searching for interns for the spring 2012 semester. The deadline to apply is December 12, 2011. Please indicate the internship position to which you are applying.
1. The Research Intern will have the opportunity to work across programs (national, local, policy) and learn many aspects of policy and economic research, advocacy and workforce development. Policy issues addressed by WOW and most likely to be worked on by the intern include: family and elder economic security (income security, housing, food security, health), workforce development and unemployment.
The Research Intern will assist with development of models, tools for policy analysis; assist with data collection and management; assist with the production of research reports; and attend local conferences and roundtables.
Candidates should have an interest in economics, public policy, social work, statistics or related field. Experience with basic spreadsheets preferred and additional experience with database applications is a plus. Candidates should also have an interest in federal and state policy issues affecting the economic security of families and elders, such as workforce development, healthcare, asset development, public supports, entitlement programs, tax policy and gender issues.
2. The Elder Economic Security Initiative™ – National Policy Intern will be responsible for monitoring and analyzing federal policy activity related to income security and community-based services for low-income elders. You will participate in national policy advocacy in the following areas: Older Americans Act, Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP), Section 202 Housing for the Elderly, Social Security, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and others.
The Elder Initiative’s National Policy Intern will attend coalition meetings, briefings and congressional hearings on program and policy issues, disseminate federal policy information to our state partners and network members, complete web-based research on policy activity related to the Elder Initiative’s national policy goals, assist in researching and writing policy documents and implement field surveys on federal policy opportunities. Graduate level candidates preferred. You will report to the Field Manager for the Elder Economic Security Initiative.
3. The Federal Policy Intern will attend coalition meetings, briefings and congressional hearings on program and policy issues (e.g. workforce development, economic policy, welfare, education, asset development), develop policy memos and issue briefs, update web resources and disseminate federal policy information to our state partners and network members. Our national programs engage in organizing, research and advocacy – using the common framework of economic security – to design, implement and advocate for programs and policies that move low-income families and seniors towards economic independence.
WOW draws on the experience of state partners and networks to inform federal policy. As the Federal Policy Intern, you will monitor and analyze federal proposals, organize meetings and Congressional briefings, respond to state requests for information and assist in researching and writing policy documents. Graduate level candidates preferred. You will report to the Director of Federal Policy.
4. Family Economic Security Program Intern – WOW’s Family Economic Security (FES) program supports organizations nationwide in building economic security for low-income women and families through technical assistance, political advocacy, and new research. The program is seeking an intern to support our work. Applicants should have strong writing skills and the ability to work well in a team. Among other duties, the FES Program Intern will have the opportunity to: (1) write blog entries, tweets, email newsletters, etc.; (2) write and edit research pieces; (3) create content for feeds and snippets in various social media sites; and (4) represent the Program at coalition meetings and public events.
Additionally, as the FES Program Intern, you will: learn about existing state and federal policies concerning low-income families; develop weekly program and policy newsletters, which are distributed to key state and organizational partners nationwide; monitor and attend meetings, conferences and hearings that focus on policies and programs relevant to FES and state partners; and perform administrative tasks as needed. This internship will provide a great opportunity to hone research and writing skills, gain an in-depth understanding of the issues facing low-income women and learn about the work of advocacy organizations around the country.
